blue puya

The Blue Puya is one of those plants you sometimes see in books but never quite believe is real. Startling antennae of metallic blue flowers with contrasting orange anthers from clumps of silver leaves make up a wacky concoction. Often shown in some rugged Chilean landscape so it at least seems unlikely that you'd ever lay eyes on one.
But for anyone within range of Mt Tomah Botanic Gardens, right now is your chance. The Puya berteroniana are out!
Rare, slow-growing and highly prickly, they're not necessarily a grower's dream. But they don't need much water, withstand exposure to salt winds, attract birds - and are just plain astonishing to see.
