Another ginger noted doing well in Melbourne was this Snap Ginger. Plants for tropical-style gardens in non-tropical climates are always useful. This one grows in areas colder than Melbourne's and even bounces back from frost. But a stem only flowers in the second year so losing the canopy to frost means no show the next season – so why bother? Except it's the leaves – stepping up very upright stems – that give gingers so much of their character and texture even when in flower. Like a tropical grass. The leaves on this one even look a bit like bamboo and are used in cooking for their cardamom aroma.
