Another ginger noted doing well in Melbourne was this Snap Ginger. Plants for tropical-style gardens in non-tropical climates are always useful. This one grows in areas colder than Melbourne's and even bounces back from frost. But a stem only flowers in the second year so losing the canopy to frost means no show the next season so why bother? Except it's the leaves stepping up very upright stems that give gingers so much of their character and texture even when in flower. Like a tropical grass. The leaves on this one even look a bit like bamboo and are used in cooking for their cardamom aroma.
