‘Pygmy Possum' is a dwarf selection of Banksia serrata: the Old Man Banksia which probably wasn't the actual inspiration for May Gibbs's bad banksia men though its bristly cones are a close match. With a spread of 2-3m it's more of a genuine groundcover than the previous Banksia spinulosa varieties and the bigger saw-edged leaves don't quite have the same conifer-like effect. But it still has something of an oriental feel about it and will also fit bush, coastal and Mediterranean styles. It flowers earlier so wont be as good a winter supply of nectar for birds.
